Overview: Nice part time role available working weekends for a private school based in Letchworth. Previous caretaking or building maintenance experience would be required or strong DIY and handyperson duties.    


The hours of work will normally be 15.5 hours per week, 52 weeks a year.

Saturday’s 7.30am – 5.30pm and Sunday’s 7.30am – 2.30pm, with 30 mins unpaid break on both days.

A certain amount of flexibility would be required to proved holiday cover for the senior caretaker which would be paid as overtime.

Main duties and responsibilities.

Locking and Unlocking of the premises for weekend activities.  This activity involves switching on/off lights and heating, closing/opening windows as appropriate, setting/un-setting of alarms,

Operate routine security arrangements to prevent/deter unauthorised access to the building whilst weekend activities are taking place.

Provide access to the buildings and grounds to authorised persons. Act as main site contact for any Caretaking or emergency issues that may arise and be able to control/manage an emergency evacuation situation.

Be familiar will the fire and intruder alarm system.

Carry out routine patrol of the premises to prevent/deter unauthorised access to the Estate.

Ensure that the security and safety policies are adhered to at all times.

Maintenance of the grounds i.e. litter picking, sweeping and removal of rubbish from all parts of the Estate. Clearance for access in the event of flood, snow or other emergency.

Ensure the buildings have been left in a suitable standard after weekend activities, reporting any issues to either the Resident Senior Caretaker or Estates Manager.

Assist with the upkeep of the swimming pool. This activity will require the pool side & changing rooms to be cleaned on a Sunday morning before external lets arrive – training will be provided.

Carry out water temperature readings and routine monitoring under the supervision of the Estates Manager.

Carry out general portering, arrangement and removal of furniture and equipment so it’s ready for weekday activities.

Carry out emergency cleaning work, for example in the absence of cleaning staff, or when, for example a child has been sick, clearing blocked WC’s etc.

Carry out weekly recycling of waste paper from classrooms and offices and staff rooms.

Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the Minibus fleet which includes washing the exterior and interior of the buses & and carrying out routine condition checks.

Replenish water bottles as and when required.

Replace batteries in doors guards as and when required. Change clocks subject to seasonal change.

Carry out inspections of the three main plant-rooms to check for leaks or equipment failures. Record calorifier temperatures.

Assist with room set-up and car park duties on Open Mornings.

The WKC may also be asked to assist in various other tasks, examples of which are, routine fire safety checks or collection of meter readings for services as instructed by the Estates Manager or Resident Senior Caretaker.


there are significant expectations regarding staff behaviour and in particular access to certain areas of the building, are in place. For example, male staff MUST be accompanied by a member of the Boarding Staff when working in the boarding area.

Non-smoking environment.

All staff must be of smart appearance – a staff uniform will be provided.

All employment is subject to satisfactory child protection screening being carried out.

Training and Work Equipment

The WKC will be expected to hold both a current Fire Safety and First Aid qualification. The College will provide training or pay reasonable training costs where the need arises. “Everyday” work equipment and Personal Protective Equipment, if required, will be provided.

Be computer and mobile phone literate Education:

Be able to work as part of a team but equally be able to work on own initiative

Have the ability to remain calm under pressure

Previous experience of caretaking/or building maintenance/security DIY and handyman tasks Experience:

Have an understanding of security systems, heating plant and other building systems

Be flexible and willing to assist where required
Have a good level of general fitness and physical ability to carry, lift and move loads on a regular basis


First Aid Qualification
Hold a recognised Health & Safety qualification

Demonstrate ability to be able resolve problems independently

Previous key holding experience
Held a previous emergency response position
Previous pool maintenance advantageous
